Why carry two lines at all?

A question that comes up often: "If beam blades are the newer technology, why not just stock beam blades and be done with it?"

Because the two lines are not a new-versus-old sequence. They cover two genuinely different customer situations, both of which walk into your bays every week.

Model 799 beam: where it fits

A beam blade's advantage comes from its construction — a one-piece pre-curved steel spine distributes contact pressure across the windshield more evenly, and the flatter profile generates less aerodynamic lift.

Those properties matter most in three situations:

  • Later-model vehicles. Nearly all recent vehicles ship from the factory with beam blades. When the owner replaces them, the expectation is "the same as what came on the car."
  • Customers sensitive to noise. The flat profile produces less wind noise at highway speed. That is a function of the aerodynamics, not marketing.
  • Customers who care how it looks. No exposed metal framework means a cleaner appearance.

Model 818 conventional: why it is still necessary

Conventional blades — the traditional articulated metal frame design — still hold real advantages in specific cases:

  • Older vehicles with more curved windshields. Vehicles built in the 2000s and earlier were designed to different glass curvature conventions. A multi-point articulated frame adapts to those curves more forgivingly.
  • Price-sensitive customers. The conventional structure costs less to manufacture. For a customer who wants a clean sweep and nothing more, it is the sensible choice.
  • Commercial vehicles and fleets. For pickups, vans, and work trucks, the priorities are durability, cost, and ease of replacement — not quiet operation or appearance.

On winter conditions: some technicians in cold-climate regions report that the metal frame of a conventional blade is easier to de-ice by hand and returns to proper contact more readily. There is no settled industry consensus on this, so treat it as field experience rather than an engineering conclusion.

Carrying both lines is not about steering customers toward the more expensive option. It is about making sure every vehicle that comes through the door has an answer that fits both the car and the budget. Stock only beam blades and you lose price-sensitive customers and older vehicles. Stock only conventional and you fall short of what owners of newer vehicles expect.

In practice: how technicians can recommend

A simple situational rule, no product specifications to memorize:

Newer or higher-end vehicle → recommend the 799 beam. "Same construction as what came on the car, and quieter."

Older vehicle, or the customer asks for the lowest price → recommend the 818 conventional. "Does the same job, costs less."

The customer makes the call. You have both answers available — that is the entire point of running two lines.
